Τα βερύκοκα είναι πλούσια σε βιταμίνη Α, που συμβάλλει στην καλή υγεία των ματιών, και κυρίως των πρόδρομων αυτής ουσιών, των καροτενοειδών (β-καροτένιο, λυκοπένιο, λουτεΐνη και ζεαξανθίνη), στα οποία οφείλεται και το πορτοκαλί τους χρώμα.
Αποτελούν επίσης καλή πηγή βιταμίνης C και φλαβονοειδών (π.χ. κερκετίνη, κατεχίνη, επικατεχίνη), τα οποία έχουν αντιοξειδωτικές ιδιότητες, ενώ παράλληλα προστατεύουν τα αγγεία, εμποδίζουν την οξείδωση της «κακής» χοληστερίνης.
Επιπλέον, περιέχουν βιταμίνη Β3 (νιασίνη), σίδηρο, χαλκό, κάλιο και φυτικές ίνες, οι οποίες είναι απαραίτητες για την καλή υγεία του πεπτικού συστήματος και την καταπολέμηση της δυσκοιλιότητας.
Eπίσης, έρευνες αποδεικνύουν ότι πρόκειται για φρούτα εξαιρετικά πλούσια σε λυκοπένιο, ένα καροτενοειδές που συνδέεται με προστασία από τον καρκίνο του προστάτη. Τέλος, αποτελούν σύμμαχο στο αδυνάτισμα, καθώς οι υδατάνθρακες που περιέχουν ικανοποιούν το αίσθημα για κάτι γλυκό, χωρίς να προσδίδουν πολλές θερμίδες. Με χαμηλή θερμιδική αξία, μόλις 48 θερμίδες (τα 2 βερίκοκα), το βερίκοκο συνιστάται σε όσους ακολουθούν κάποια δίαιτα και όχι μόνο.
